Dear patients!
We declared Dental Health Month in November, drawing attention to the use of smoked tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and snus. The topic proved to be especially interesting for our young target group, aged 18–25, who accounted for a total of 86.6% of video viewers according to our YouTube statistics.
Lauri Vahtra, the head of Kliinik 32 explains that this year’s social awareness campaign www.hammastetervisekuu.ee was organized to address a worrying trend detected in Estonia. Namely, the share of people smoking e-cigarettes at least once a month in the age group of 16–24-year-olds has significantly increased, reaching 23.5% among men (with the average of 11.8% among men in general) and 34.5% among women (with the average of 10.8% among women in general). “We need to take this trend very seriously because it is younger smokers who experience a more rapid onset of more destructive forms of diseases,” notes Dr Vahtra.
The gravity of the problem is also perceived by schools and youth centres, which supported the initiative and shared the campaign videos. We hope that the increased awareness about this painful problem will help people give up unnecessary vices, and the videos posted in November will be of use in the future. We tried to make the videos funny so that they speak to the young audience.
The video starring Mattias Naan, which asks “Why lose a tooth for snus?”, turned out to be the most popular one during the dental health awareness month. We got plenty of feedback about the video, and it was apparent that despite our doctors’ efforts to educate people about the problem during appointments, there are many people in Estonia for whom this video was the first time they ever heard about the harmful effect of such substances on teeth.
